Bathrooms are often planned last and finished with whatever tiles are left in the budget. Yet it is the room you start and end each day in. With a little more thought, it can feel like a retreat rather than a utility space.

1. Statement walls

A waterproof wallpaper, a hand-painted mural or a single wall of patterned stone turns the bathroom into a room with its own character.

2. A touch of industrial

Exposed pipes, concrete-finish walls and matt black fixtures give a bathroom a confident, urban feel. Balance them with warm lighting and a timber shelf.

3. A living green wall

Plants that enjoy humidity thrive in bathrooms. A vertical garden or a few hanging plants soften hard surfaces and freshen the air.

4. Smart fixtures

Sensor taps, demisting mirrors and lighting that dims at night add comfort and save water and power.

5. A vintage vanity

An old dresser or cabinet, sealed and fitted with a basin, brings character that a factory vanity cannot. Pair it with modern taps for balance.

6. A sculptural bathtub

Where there is room, an oval or freestanding stone tub becomes the centrepiece of the space.

7. Textured tiles

Fluted, ribbed or three-dimensional tiles catch light and shadow, giving even a small bathroom depth.

8. Coloured grout

A simple change from white grout to a soft colour can make plain tiles look intentional and fresh.

9. Lighting with character

Replace a single ceiling light with wall lights beside the mirror, a pendant over the tub or a soft strip under the vanity. The room will feel warmer and the light at the mirror will be kinder.

10. Open shelves

A few open shelves for folded towels, plants and well-chosen objects make the room feel lived in. Keep them out of the direct splash zone.

Pick two or three of these ideas rather than all ten. A bathroom with one strong idea, done well, will feel more considered than one that tries everything.
